The About Encopresis Website:

This website had the most active parents' forum about encopresis on the internet, but it fell victim to being overburdened by spammers. It has continued to have sporadic parent inputs, but its traffic has slowed significantly. I have established an alternative and successful forum through www.encopresis.org (or www.bedwetting.org or www.enuresis.org--they all point to the same forums) as a public service open to all. I have taken safeguards against spammers by examining all registrants for obvious give away signs. I will enforce good netiquette and ban commercial messages for these forums. All viewpoints will be welcomed. Feel free to check out encopresis.org (click here). As an additional feature you will also find an enuresis forum at any of these aforementioned .org sites. DrC.

Australia--A Pediatrician Specializing in Treating Enuresis and Encopresis:

Dr. David Cutting is a valued colleague who is reporting initial success rates of 79% using the bedwetting alarm in his pediatric office practice in Melbourne Australia. At 6 mo's 73% continued to be dry and at 24 mo's 64% continued dry. It is very rare that a busy practicing physician is able to systematically conduct follow up research and report on the results of his own treatments. He utilizes two continence nurses and his interventions are very elaborate and very, very supportive. Check his site out.

National Register of Health Service Providers for Psychology:

Dr Collins is a charter member. The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, a national nonprofit organization, is committed to advancing psychology as a profession and improving the delivery of health services to the public. To realize its mission, it:

*Disseminates standards for evaluating the education and training of licensed psychologists;

*Reviews the practices and ethics of psychologists to ensure integrity in the profession and quality of patient care; and
*Provides information on psychologists to the health care community and to the general public.
*With twenty-five years of experience serving the public, psychologists, and the healthcare community, the National Register is the largest and most successful credentialing organization in psychology.

New Zealand Enuresis Encopresis Association:

This is a truly unique organization led by parents with a combined interest in both enuresis and encopresis. My impression is that in many "socialized medicine" countries much more is asked, expected, and volunteered by families to manage problems with behavioral methods than here in the USA. The USA appears to be more medicalized and "stuck" on the use of medications and surgical procedures.

Nonretentive Encopresis:

While the majority of the cases of encopresis are of the retentive or "outlet obstruction" variety, some children pass normal, soft stools, but don't do it when and where they are supposed to, which is the very definition of encopresis. The medical assessment is usually normal, and signs of constipation are noticeably absent. This link takes you to the original article entitled, "Treatment Guidelines for Primary Nonretentive Encopresis and Stool Toileting Refusal" in The American Family Physician, which you can read through in the original. You will also find there the means for ordering a pamphlet on this problem. Our Soiling Solutions approaches can often be effective for this form of encopresis because it regulates and forms habits for urge recognition and voiding on a regular, preventative schedule. Many medical authorities are pessimistic about the successful treatment of this form of encopresis.Title: Sleep Disorders Guide

Sleep Disorders:

A comprehensive information guide about sleep disorders. Descriptions, symptoms, causes, treatments of various sleep disorders like sleep apnea, bedwetting, encopresis, insomnia, snoring, restless legs and narcolepsy.

A Spirituality Web Directory:

This is a Holistic Health directory dealing with non-traditional and alternative health perspectives. This website is included under biofeedback at this site which is simply another view of conditioning physiological responses. This allows my approaches to remain more on the hard behavioral or medical science side of alternatives to the traditional surgical and medication approaches.

Thomson ISI--Formerly the Institute for Scientific Information:

For over 45 years, ISI® (founded as the Institute for Scientific Information®) has been providing over seven million researchers with products and services that help them to keep up with the scientific advances in their own areas of interest.

Tri-state Incontinence Support Group:

This is an excellent educational site for information and resources dealing with incontinence in adults and children. It has been in existence for at least 10 years and is lay-led.

University of North Carolina Center for Functional GI & Motility Disorders:

This site offers up-to-date information on Functional GI and Motility Disorders for both the professional and the patient, and provides information on the Center and its research, training, patient education and clinical treatment. The Co-directors of this Center are Douglas A Drossman, MD and William Whitehead, PhD who have been very instrumental in the formation of the International Foundation of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (see link above) and arranging for its International Conferences on Encopresis and Enuresis.

University of Virginia Children's Medical Center:

This is a good authoritative independent site for basic, background information on encopresis. It provides a good graphic of the GI tract and how retentive encopresis occurs. It provides the best, most complete account of the traditional approaches to treating encopresis. I have cited the work of Dr Daniel Cox and Lee Ritterband from the University of Virginia under the Scientific Articles and Most Recent Scientific Abstracts pages on this web site. Stephen Borowitz, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Health Evaluation Sciences, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, University of Virginia is the author of www.aboutencopresis.com, which formerly had the most active encopresis discussion list on the internet as of January, 2005. Personal communication with Dr Ritterband indicates that a major research study will likely be undertaken in the Spring of 2008 on their web-based approach to the treatment of encopresis. I will assist in recruiting subject for that study on my Home page when they are ready to announce it (also visit encopresis.com).
